Making of “Ritsu & Uta”

これは、きっと私が生涯忘れることのない作品です。死ぬ間際に思い出すとしたら、きっとこの作品のことだと思います。

二体の大型バービーを上下、さらに左右に切断し、二人を一体にする。
強度を保つため、内部には骨格となる柱を組んだ。
机の上では何度も計算した。
でも、本当にできるのか？
切断した二頭を一体に成形することはできるだろう。けれど、果たして身長71cmの二人は、バランスよく自分の足で立つことができるのか？

最後まで、それだけはわかりませんでした。
そして完成の日。
二人が真っ直ぐに立った姿を見た瞬間、私は自分の二人の子供たちを思い出しました。
初めて歩いた日。
初めて自転車に乗った瞬間。

あの時と同じように、私はただ、歓喜したのです。

This is a piece I’ll never forget. If I ever think of one piece on my deathbed, it will probably be this one.

I cut two large Barbies apart—top to bottom, then left to right—and turned them into one.
I built an internal frame to keep them strong.
I did the math over and over.
But would it really work?
I knew I could make the two cut-up dolls into one. But would they actually stand on their own, balanced on two legs?

I didn’t know until the very end.
And then, the day they were finished, I saw them standing straight and thought of my two children.
Their first steps.
The first time they rode a bike.

Just like then, I was simply overjoyed.
