A Tattooed Love Letter - タトゥのラブレター

昨年の暮れ、自身のボーイフレンドへの秘密の贈り物として、彼に見立てたケン人形にタトゥを施して欲しい、という依頼を受けました。

その頃の私は、日本での個展準備に全力を注いでおり、新たな仕事を引き受けられる状況ではありませんでしたが、この依頼だけは例外としました。

というのも、数年前にその彼こそが、ガールフレンドに見立てたバービー人形の製作を依頼してきた張本人であり、今回はその彼女からの、いわば粋な返礼だったのです。

なんてロマンティックなんだ！

私は深く心を動かされ、この美しい往復書簡のような物語を、何としてでもかたちにしたいと思い、全力で挑みました。

先日、その二体が並んだ写真が送られてきました。

人様の人生の大切な一瞬に、自分の入魂の作品が関わることができた。良い仕事をさせてもらった、と静かに感じています。

そして、その機会を託してくださった二人に、心より感謝しています。

Late last year, I received a request to tattoo a Ken doll modeled after someone’s boyfriend, as a secret gift for him.

At the time, I was fully focused on preparing for my solo exhibition in Japan and wasn’t in a position to take on new work―but I made an exception for this one.

A few years ago, the boyfriend himself had commissioned a Barbie doll modeled after his girlfriend. This time, it was her turn―a thoughtful and stylish return gesture.

How romantic is that?

I was genuinely moved and felt compelled to bring this beautiful back-and-forth love story to life, so I gave it everything I had.

Recently, I received a photo of the two dolls standing side by side. To know that my heartfelt work became part of such a meaningful moment in their lives means a great deal to me.

I quietly feel that I was able to do good work―and I’m sincerely grateful to them both for trusting me with it.
