三年前、私はスーに触発され、ロジャー・マクグーの散文詩 “Punk Doll” や自分の好きなパンクアイコンを絡めて、人形を制作したことがあります。
セックス・ピストルズの親衛隊、ザ・ブロムリー・コンティンジェントの一員であったスー・キャットウーマン。
興味深いのは、彼女の髪型やファッションが、無政府主義的な政治思想や単純な反抗心、暴力性や大衆への冒涜とはまったく無縁であったことです。スー自身が明言しているように、それはむしろごく身近な基本的人権、個人の表現の自由を、静かにファッション的ヴィジュアルで訴えるものでした。
反抗ではなく「表現の自由」という原初的な言葉で語ったスーの姿勢、そしてパンクを超えた概念や存在感は、バンドメンバーやアーティストでさえなかったにもかかわらず、ある意味でピストルズ以上に“ピストルズ”であったと言えるでしょう。
当時誰よりもお洒落で抜群のファッションセンスを持っていただけでなく、そうした純粋性こそが、スーの姿がいつまでもパンク・アイコンとして記憶され続ける理由なのだと思います。ハートからの行動は、特別な直通電話のように人々の心へ直接届く。無論、私の心にも。
三年前、彼女について綴った文章を「後に彼女は二人の子どもを育て上げ、今もロンドンで静かに暮らしている。」と締めくくりました。しかし残念ながら、彼女は旅立ってしまいました。
スーの息子さんであるシェム氏は、お母さまの葬儀費用を支援するためにGofundmeを立ち上げています。
スー、ありがとう。心からご冥福をお祈りいたします。
Soo Catwoman has passed away.
Three years ago, inspired by Soo, I created a doll based on Roger McGough’s prose poem “Punk Doll” mixed with my favorite punk icons.
She was a member of the Bromley Contingent, the Sex Pistols’ close circle. What is striking is that her hairstyle and fashion had nothing to do with anarchist politics, simple rebellion, violence, or contempt for the masses. As Soo herself said, it was really about basic human rights, the freedom of personal expression, quietly declared through visual style.
Her attitude―speaking not of rebellion but of freedom of expression―and her presence that went beyond punk made her, in a way, “more Pistols than the Pistols,” even though she was neither a band member nor an artist.
She was not only the most stylish with outstanding fashion sense, but it was her purity that makes her image unforgettable as a punk icon. Actions from the heart are like a direct line that reaches people’s hearts. Mine too.
Three years ago I wrote about her and ended with: “Later she raised two children and still lived quietly in London.” Sadly, she has now left us.
Her son Shem is setting up a Gofundme to support her funeral expenses.
Thank you, Soo. You were such an icon, my inspiration. Rest in Punk.
