RIP Sly Stone

スライ・ストーン逝く。
アルバム「暴動」と「Fresh」は、死後に墓に持っていけるとしたら迷わず選ぶ。繰り返し聴いてきた。
『暴動』に漂う、全体的に沈んだ孤独感──前作Stand!のあと、ドラッグの影響やメンバー間の軋轢により、ほぼ一人で制作されたことも大きいだろう。そして、Maestro Rhythm Kingによるリズムボックスのソリッドな質感も、その孤独感を際立たせている。だがその暗さが、たまらなく心地よい。
70年代初頭の彼のレーベルStone Flower時代の音源を集めた「Sly’s Stone Flower」も圧巻。時期としてはStand!と『暴動』の間にあたるので、その音像も想像しやすいだろう。『暴動』につながる試行錯誤と美学が散りばめられた、極上の一枚。Maestroをフィーチャーしたインナースリーヴも痺れるほどかっこいい。
音楽に関わる仕事をしていて、スライを素通りしてきた人を、私は認めることができない──そんな「偏屈で差別的」な“スライ原理主義者”であることを、死ぬまで貫く（傲慢なやつだ勝手にしやがれ）貫くつもりだ。

Sly Stone is gone.
‘There’s a Riot Goin On’ and ‘Fresh’ go in the coffin with me. No debate. I’ve listened to them over and over. Still do.
‘Riot’ has that deep, heavy loneliness in every track. After ‘Stand!’, the band fell apart, drugs took over, and Sly pretty much made it alone. The Maestro Rhythm King drum machine adds this tight, cold groove ― maybe that’s what makes it feel so isolated, so dark… but damn beautiful.
And ‘Sly’s Stone Flower’ ― a killer collection from his early ‘70s label ― is pure gold. It sits right between Stand! and Riot, so yeah, you can really hear the transition. It’s full of that raw, lo-fi funk and early drum machine genius. Even the inner sleeve featuring the Maestro looks insanely cool.
Honestly, if you work in music and don’t know Sly, I just can’t take you seriously. I’ll proudly stay a stubborn, elitist Sly fundamentalist till the day I die.
RIP Sly. You taught groove like no one else.
