パリを拠点にする友人で画家の田中麻記子氏から人形の依頼を受けたはいいが、どうにもインスピレーションが湧かず、完成まで5年かかってしまった。

鉛筆画や水彩画等、さまざまなミディアムを駆使した彼女の作品の中でも、個人的にはまるで悪夢のようなダークでシュールな世界観なのに、どこかフェミニンで絶妙なユーモアのセンスが効いた迫力の油絵が特に好きだ。

過去には岡本太郎賞を受賞し、文化庁が推す海外研修制度の在外研修員の資格を得たりと、つまり己の絵で周りを黙らせてきた泣く子も黙る筋金入りの「絵描き・画家」だ。

ゆえに、私は半端な人形は作れない、そのプレッシャーに5年も押し潰されたのだった。

とはいえ実際に本人にお会いすると、まるで手塚治虫の漫画のキャラクターのような雰囲気といい、作品と彼女のギャップに驚かされる。

去年、私は18年ぶりに帰国し、都内の某ショップでの展示をさせていただいた。旧友でオーナーでもある彼の自宅に招かれ、手ぶらではいけないので同ショップ店長に近場で気の利いたスイーツは手に入らないものかと尋ねたところ、青山のピエール・エルメはどうかと勧められた。ケーキを選び包装してもらっている間、見覚えのある筆触で描かれたイラストが店のマスコットとしてそこらじゅうにあることに気づいた。なるほど、マキコ・タナカだ。

いつまでもアンダーグラウンドで燻っている自分とは違い、オーヴァーグラウンドのメジャー・シーンで活躍する彼女の大きさを改めて思い知らされ頭がおかしくなったのか、すかさず私は大見栄を切って「その白ワインも下さい」と、今までに購入したこともない高額なワインを「ついでに」買ってしまったのだった。「絵は人を狂わす」とはよく言ったものだ。

その一連の経緯がきっかけなのかは計り知れないが、フランスに戻り夏を迎えるあたりから突然制作意欲が湧き、数日で作り上げてしまった。

麻記子さん、遅くなり申し訳ありませんでした。

I received this doll commission from my painter friend Makiko Tanaka, based in Paris, but I struggled to find inspiration, took me five years to complete it.

Among her works using various mediums like pencils, watercolors, I personally adore her powerful oil paintings with a dark, surrealistic worldview that feels almost like a nightmare, yet infused with a touch of femininity and exquisite sense of humor.

Having won the Taro Okamoto Award in the past, qualified under the Cultural Agency's recommended international training program, hell yes, she is a kickass artist who's silenced critics with her own paintings.

Therefore, I couldn't create a mediocre doll. The pressure from it crushed me for five years. However, when I actually met her in person, I was amazed by her atmosphere, resembling a character from Osamu Tezuka's manga, and surprised by the contrast between her works and her persona.

Last year, I returned to Japan after 18 years and had an exhibition at a certain shop in Tokyo. Being invited from the owner/old friend of mine, I didn't want to go empty-handed, so I asked the shop manager for any recommendation for a cake shop nearby. "Pierre Hermé in Aoyama", he said, and I promptly went there. While having my cake wrapped, I noticed familiar brushstrokes in the illustrations adorning the shop, serving as their mascot. It was none other than "Makiko Tanaka".

After being reminded of her success in the mainstream scene, I got carried away and impulsively bought an expensive wine I'd never tried before, as if my head went haywire. It's true what they say, "Art drives people crazy."

Whether this experience was the trigger or not, when I returned to France and summer approached, my creative inspiration suddenly sparked, and within a few days, I finished my work.
