I’ll wager no one on earth has read Ryu Murakami’s Coin Locker Babies more times than I have.
From left: French Picquier Poche, Japanese Kodansha Bunko, English Pushkin Press. The translations cut scenes, softenin the novel’s violent pace, weight, and rhythm.
Around 1987, Hinomaru Driving School was packed with people reading the red and green books. Whole army of “Harukists” with upturned polo collars and sweaters over their shoulders. Stones vs. Beatles: they were reading Haruki Murakami’s Norwegian Wood. (Big respect for Haruki, it’s the Harukists I competed with.)
Among them, helmet for a pillow, showing off my battered copy of Coin Locker Babies, secretly blowing cigarette smoke their way.
Chanting “Datura,” Gazelle’s spell of destruction and murder taught to Kiku, I point my gun at the Harukists and shoot them. In my imagination.
Counting Shinjuku’s thirteen towering towers, guessing where the forbidden zone of Yakushima might be.
Imitating Hashi’s dangerously beautiful voice, said to drive listeners to deaths.
Desperately searching for David Bowie’s “Uranus.”
Did Mick Jagger really cut his tongue with scissors?
Comparing a girl I loved to Anemone, keeper of a three-metre crocodile, and giving her a toy croc…

This novel possesses me. I want to stay that way. I’ll take it to my grave.
Datura, Datura, Datura…
With heartfelt thanks to Ryu Murakami.
Rest in peace.
