誰かの記憶に触れるとき - その２

アンティークや中古品を通して、誰かの記憶に触れてしまった話をもう一つしたい。
アルルの古道具屋で見つけた、1976年のStevie Wonderの”Songs in the Key of Life”。観音開き内側、太陽にStevieの顔がリフレインする迫力のイラスト。燃える太陽にペンの落書きあり。店主に5€負けさす。
自宅で落書きを改めて見ると：De Françoise à Gérard Noël 76 - フランソワーズから ジェラールへ クリスマス 76
つまり、このレコードは1976年のクリスマスに、女性フランソワーズから男性ジェラールへ贈った、粋なプレゼント。個人的なメッセージを直接書き込むという行為から、親密度が伺える。二人は恋人、あるいは片想い？兄妹、家族か？想像は尽きない。
クリスマスという特別な日に、フランソワーズがわざわざこの濃密すぎるアルバムを選んだのは、ヒット作だからではなく、Stevieがこのアルバムで謳った愛、家族、社会問題、人生の豊かさや前向きな希望を、ジェラールと共有したかったから。と読むのは都合が良すぎるが、音楽を介して分かち合われた温かな証であることには違いない。
そんな心境の変化もあり、古道具屋で5€負けさせたことを悪く思い、返そうと後日出向いたが、手前のケバブ屋で5€のケバブを買い、家に引き返した。このレコードは今でも大切にしている。

Another story of brushing against someone’s memory through an old thing.
I found Songs in the Key of Life, Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album, at a junk shop in Arles. Inside the gatefold, an illustration of a blazing sun, Stevie’s face repeating. Over it, a message scribbled in pen. I pointed it out and got 5 euros off.
Later at home, I looked again. It read: De Françoise à Gérard Noël 76 - from Françoise to Gérard, Christmas ’76.
So this record was a Christmas gift, from a woman named Françoise to a man named Gérard. Written directly on the album shows how close they must have been. Lovers? A one-way crush? Siblings? Family? Hard to say.
Still, giving this dense album on Christmas feels deliberate. Not just because it was a hit, but because Stevie sang of love, family, struggle, life, and hope. Maybe Françoise wanted Gérard to hear all that. Reading it that way may be a silly wishful thinking―but still, something warm passed through music.
With that in mind, I felt bad about the discount I’d gotten. Few days later, I went back to return the 5 euros. But stopped at the kebab shop and spent it there. I still keep this record with care.
