本の装丁デザイン A Spy-Style Book Design

これまで本の装丁デザインの依頼を受けたことが一度もなく、それは長年の憧れだった。

数年前、日本で隠居生活を送る父が、ステージ4の膵臓癌と診断され、余命数ヶ月と告げられた。診断を受ける以前、隠居後のライフワークとして、70年代から駐在員として各国を渡り歩いた自身の人生を、実話をベースに小説として綴っていた。全十巻にも及ぶ長編で、最終巻に着手した矢先に病を告げられた。

そんな折、父は私にその最終巻の装丁デザインを依頼してきた。

小説のタイトルは”ミッション・ポッシブル”。60年代のテレビシリーズ ”スパイ大作戦”のパロディというのが、いかにも父らしい。現役時代はオーダーのスーツにBASFの革手帳、パーカーの万年筆、ティファニーのカフスボタン、デュポンのライター、ロンジンの時計を身につけ、米国では射撃訓練にも通うなど、どこかスパイを気取っていた節がある。

そこで私は、裏表紙にそれら愛用品をあしらい、テレックスや現代風のUSBキーも加え、最後の”ミッション”の舞台であるチャイナのイメージを盛り込み、フォントも”それっぽく”仕上げた。

抗がん剤の副作用と闘い、変わり果てた姿となりながらも、父は今も存命だ。だから私は、何としてでも帰国し、次の小説の執筆をそっと促したいと思っている。

I had always dreamed of designing a book cover, but never had the chance―until my father asked me.

A few years ago, my father, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. Before the diagnosis, he had taken on a personal project: turning his life as an expat―traveling around the world since the 1970s―into a series of novels based on true stories. It was a ten-volume saga, and just as he started the final volume, he got the news about his illness.

That’s when he asked me to design the cover for the last volume.

Title? Mission Possible. A playful take on the old TV show Mission: Impossible. Very him. Back in his working days, he used to wear custom suits, carry a BASF leather notebook, a Parker fountain pen, Tiffany cufflinks, a Dupont lighter, and a Longines watch. He even practiced shooting in the U.S. You could say he liked to think of himself as a bit of a spy.

So I designed the back cover with all those personal items, added a telex, a USB stick for a modern twist, and brought in some imagery from China―the final “mission” in the story. I even picked a font that looked just right.

He’s holding on, fighting through the side effects of chemo. That’s why I’m determined to go back to Japan and gently encourage him to write the next book.
