700mm x 700mmの作品では、45回転のシングル盤ジャケットを16枚（8000ピクセル）使って構成されている。デジタル全盛の時代に、アナログの材料を用いてアナログな手法で作られた気の遠くなるような執念の曼荼羅図案は圧巻だ。他にも、レコード盤上にブレイル点字を付けたインスタレーション「ソニック・ブレイル」も見られる。

記憶が曖昧だが、80年代に「ヤング・アインシュタイン」という若き日のアインシュタインを題材にしたコメディ映画で、バイオリンを現代のエレキギターのように改造し、原子力アンプに繋げストーンズのサティスファクションのリフをプレイしロックンロールを発明するというシーンがあったが、奇想天外なリーヴの作品を見る度に思い出してしまうシーンだ。
Reeve Schumacher, an American artist residing in Arles, using the singles and LP records of renowned chanson singer Mireille Mathieu to create geometric mandala designs for his solo show, 'Mimimandala.'
One of his artwork measures 700mm x 700mm and is composed of 16 single record jackets (8000 pixels). In an era dominated by digital technology, the painstakingly crafted mandala patterns using analog materials evoke a sense of dedication and awe. Additionally, you can also find an installation called 'Sonic Braille' featuring Braille markings on record discs.
In the past, I remember Reeve has showcased "experimental instrument-like" installations using speakers and cassette tape decks, reminiscent of the heydays of John Zorn, or Laurie Anderson. However, when I checked the Instagram account of the gallery hosting his solo show @lhoste_arles, I was surprised to find a photo of Reeve with Laurie herself! Oh wow, it's such a delightful story that Laurie made an appearance!
Although my memory is vague, there was a comedy film in the 1980s called 'Young Einstein,' which depicted a young Einstein modifying a violin into a modern electric guitar, connecting it to an "atomic powered amplifier", and playing the riff from The Rolling Stones' 'Satisfaction'. Every time I see Reeve's fantastical artworks, it reminds me of that scene.
His show will be held at @lhoste_arles until August 12th.
